Middlesex School

Middlesex School is a co-educational, non-sectarian, day and boarding independent secondary school for grades 9-12 located in Concord, Massachusetts. Most of the campus buildings are located around The Circle, a grassy field at the center of the school. The campus was designed by the Olmsted Brothers landscape architectural firm, and the firm Peabody and Stearns designed most of the main buildings. A recent addition is the Clay Centennial Center, completed in 2003, which hosts science and math classes as well as an observatory with an 18-inch research grade telescope.

PLANNING: Campus/Land Use Planning
Working directly with the School’s Board of Trustees over more than three years, a series of critical land use issues involving the expansion of academic and athletic facilities were successfully resolved and implemented, while preserving the beauty and character of this Olmsted Brothers’ designed campus.

DESIGN: Guidelines
As part of the implementation process, a set of campus-specific design guidelines was created and used to direct the site and architectural character of all new projects.

DESIGN: Owner’s Representative
Acted as campus architect in collaborating with each design team in order to assure that the project designs/outcomes fulfilled the intent of the Board and the senior administration.
